additional information:

botanically, this plant is actually not a marjoram.  It is high in 1,8-cineole, giving it a fresh, penetrating aroma similar to marjoram.  To the historical “nose”, this plant “felt” and “acted like” a marjoram, even though botanically it was not;  the plant was traditionally used in much the same way (cooking and medicine) as marjoram, and back in the day, herbalists often grouped plants by their function rather than strict plant heritage.  Exporters also wanted to use the regional or more familiar name to assure the foreign buyers understood the plant’s affect and uses.  So…we have here another example of how botany tells one story, and aroma/herbal tradition tells another, and both are true in their own way.

Medicinal Benefits: Supports digestion and relieves bloating. Calms the nervous system, easing stress and anxiety. Acts as an expectorant, helpful for respiratory issues, reflecting its cineole content. Mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.  Some find it offers great relief for headaches/migraines, and massage therapists often love to use it for tight muscles…as it relaxes them and makes it easier to work out the knots.

Spiritual/Emotional Benefits: Traditionally used to promote peace, comfort, and emotional healing. Associated with love and protection rituals. Encourages relaxation and openness in meditation.

Historical Benefits: Revered by the ancient Greeks as a symbol of joy and happiness. Used in Roman times for culinary and medicinal purposes. Employed in medieval Europe for preserving food and warding off illness.
