Melissa (Lemon Balm) Essential Oil
Pure Melissa (Lemon Balm) Essential Oil (Essence)
'Tickling you until you smile and remember how wonderful you BE'
Family: Lamiaceae
Latin name: Melissa officinalis
Origin: France
Farming Method: Biodynamic
Plant Parts: Leaves and Stalks
Process: Steam Distilled
Additional Information: THIS IS NOT A BLEND! Melissa (Lemon Balm) essential oil is considered one of the crown jewels of aromatherapy because it is both extraordinarily rare and extraordinarily therapeutically potent. Farmers report that it takes 3.5 tons of plant material to produce one pound of oil. Clearly it adds great value to health and well-being, or it would not be so commercially successful despite the cost of production. Melissa does not produce a large yield of essential oil/essence per amount of plant material. Other companies have been widely known to mix her with additional essential oils (like lemongrass) to increase yield and reduce cost. Be mindful in application, may be skin sensitive. Do a test patch. Also called Lemon Balm.
Pure Melissa Hydrolat / Hydrosol is also available.
beneficial uses: Melissa is one of the most powerful essential oils due to its anti-viral properties, as well as anti-microbial (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal) activity. Another excellent choice for skin health, Melissa reduces inflammation, easing conditions such as acne and eczema. Emotionally, Melissa helps lift one's spirits and boost mood; cognitively, another great choice for the night-time diffuser, as she supports cognitive function and memory, and supports restful sleep. Melissa also supports hormonal function, and helps to relieve the symptoms of menopause, along with Geranium and Clary Sage. A little goes a long way with this powerhouse. Culturally, Melissa, also known as Lemon Balm, has been used for centuries to support the immune system and calm the central nervous system. Swiss physician Paracelsus called Melissa "the Elixir of Life" in the 6th century. In the Greek language, Melissa means "honey bee", a tribute to the plant's ability to attract bees, who then produced sweet honey. Bees were considered sacred creatures and honey was used in sacred ceremonies as a concentrate of solar energy.
Medicinal benefits: This gentle, yet powerful medicine from the plant kingdom soothes the nervous system, supports digestion, and helps the body unwind from stress. Calming, antispasmodic, antiviral. Supports sleep, digestion, immune function, and stress reduction. Also soothes menopausal symptoms. Melissa is an effective antioxidant, making it a must-have in high-end skin care products.
Emotional/spiritual properties: Melissa eases emotional overwhelm, calms anxiety, and supports emotional relaxation. Melissa offers a steadying presence, and its soft, lemony aroma is a reminder to slow down and breathe.
Historical significance: Used in ancient Greek and Roman medicine; cultivated in medieval monastic gardens for its calming and restorative properties.
